Hiren’s BootCD PE is a free software collection for Microsoft Windows with a large selection of tools, drivers and tools for repair and rescue attempts around Windows and Linux partitions. The included programs of the BootCD, which users also like to search for with the terms “Hiren CD” or “Hirens BootCD”, help formatting and partitioning hard disks, scanning drives for viruses or malware, backing up and restoring data – and of course booting and restoring a damaged partition.
Computer and System Tools
With the Hiren’s BootCD PE the administrator can manage hardware and software components from BIOS to the browser. Password programs also help with encryption and security. In addition, the freeware includes programs for remote access, system benchmarks and performance optimization as well as small gimmicks such as an on-screen keyboard, a scientific calculator and a tool for mouse control using the keyboard.
Award DMI Configuration Utility, BIOS Cracker, BIOS Utility, CMOS, DISKMAN4, Kill CMOS and UniFlash take care of the Bios and CMOS. They help to delete the BIOS password and the CMOS and thus operate on an important component of the computer. Therefore, you should take a look at the website of the respective manufacturer before using it, so that damage does not occur due to lack of compatibility.
File system tools are available with AlternateStreamView, EditBINI, Ext2fsd, FileDisk Mount Tool, Filemon, ImDisk, Junction, NewSID, NTFS Access, NTFS Dos, NTFS4Dos, NTFSLinksView and Virtual Floppy Drive and support working with NTFS, FAT as well as Ext. And so that the data of individual files are not distributed everywhere on the hard disk, it can be defragmented with Defraggler, MyDefrag and PageDfrg, after which the data of a file lie one after the other on the HDD and are faster readable.
If data is to be destroyed, analyzed or repaired on the hard disk, Active Kill Disk, CrystalDiskInfo, Darik’s Boot and Nuke (DBAN), DRevitalize, DiskView, DiskWipe, HDD Erase, HDD Low Level Format Tool as well as tools from hard disk manufacturers such as Maxtor, Samsung, Toshiba and Western Digital can be used.
Lost partitions and a non-booting system require work on the master boot record (MBR) and boot loader. The Hiren’s BootCD PE contains the tools Boot Partition, BootFix Utility, BootICE, Grub4Dos, MBRWizard, MbrFix, MBR Utility and MemDisk.
Driver problems can be addressed with 3DP Chip, Device Doctor, Double Driver, PCI 32 Sniffer, Remove Non Present Drivers and Smart Driver Backup, which check the hardware and, for example, remove old and duplicate drivers.
For old DOS systems 1394 Firewire Support, ASUSTeK USB Driver, Interlnk support at COM1/LPT1, SCSI Support, SATA Support, Universal USB Driver, USB CD-Rom Driver as well as a collection of DOS tools for numerous tasks such as copying, formatting, erasing and partitioning are included.
Working with files
In contrast to Linux, Windows comes with only a few tools that allow you to work extensively with files and archives. Windows can be upgraded with 7-Zip, Bulk Rename, DOS Command Center, DOS Navigator, EasyUHA, Explore2fs, Ext2Explore, File Maven, File Wizard, FastLynx, HashMyFiles, SearchMyFiles, Total Commander, Volkov Commander and WinMerge. Some tools take care of Ext file systems used under Linux and the file managers provide an alternative to Windows Explorer. The Atlantis Word Processor, Hex Editor HxD, IrfanView, Notepad++, PhotoFiltre, Picture Viewer, QuickView Pro, the spreadsheet Spread32 and SumatraPDF help with editing and viewing files.
In the course of time many useless files accumulate, which can be found for example in temporary folders. Hiren’s BootCD PE freeware includes All Users Temp Cleaner, ATF Cleaner, CCleaner, CleanUp!, CloneSpy, Data Shredder, Delete Doctor, Duplicate File Finder, McAfee Removal Tool, MyUninstaller, Norton Removal Tool, PC Decrapifier, Print Flush, Revo Uninstaller, SpaceMonger, SpaceSniffer and WinDirStat. Among other things, they remove unwanted software that is pre-installed by computer manufacturers, find files that have been stored multiple times, and remove them, which gives you free disk space.
On the other hand, there are important files whose loss is undesirable. Here CloneDisk, COPYR.DMA, CopyWipe, DiskImage, DriveImage XML, Drive SnapShot, FastCopy, GImageX, Image for DOS, Image for Windows, ImgBurn, Partition Image, RegBak, Raw Copy, ShadowCopy, SelfImage, Seagate DiscWizard, TeraCopy, WhitSoft File Splitter and XXClone help with the imaging of partitions, files and the Windows Registry.
Virus protection and surfing
Hiren’s BootCD PE comes with several freeware for virus protection. Includes Avira AntiVir Personal, ClamWin Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, Remove Fake Antivirus, RootkitRevealer, Spybot – Search & Destroy and TDSSKiller. Unfortunately, the programs contained on the current Hiren’s BootCD PE 15.2 are from 2012, so that the installation of current programs is recommended especially in the important area of virus protection. These are available with AntiVir – Avira Free Antivirus,ClamWin,Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot – Search & Destroy for free download.
Network and Internet
You should only surf the Internet with up-to-date tools, as known security holes are closed here. Therefore, you should refrain from using the old Opera Web Browser on the Hiren’s BootCD PE. A better alternative is the current Opera Browser in our download area, which now includes a VPN service.
A current version can also be helpful when working on a network, but it does not have to be. The Hiren’s BootCD PE comes with PuTTY, CurrPorts, SoftPerfect Network Scanner and TCPView.
Preparing Hiren’s BootCD PE
To be able to use the tools on the Hiren’s BootCD PE, the ISO image must be burned to the CD or transferred to the USB stick. The ISO file for the old versions until November 2012 is contained in a ZIP file that can be unpacked via the context menu. Otherwise, Windows 7-Zip is available for unpacking. The new versions after November 2012 are no longer from Hiren, but from Hiren’s BootCD fans. Here the ISO file can be downloaded directly for 64-bit systems and does not have to be unpacked.
The burning of the ISO image can be done under Linux with K3b and under Windows with CDBurnerXP. It’s more complicated with the USB stick. First you have to format the data stick with Fat32, which HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool does under Windows. GRUB for DOS then turns the stick into a boot stick and thus bootable. The files in the ISO file now only have to be copied to the USB boot stick.
Ready for use immediately after startup
Hiren’s BootCD PE can be booted from a boot CD or USB boot stick after preparation. The latter is not possible with older versions before version 9.7. In addition, the BIOS must allow booting from a USB stick, which is not the case with very old computers. The boot disk or the boot USB stick starts automatically if the corresponding drive is set as the boot drive.
