With Hamachi virtual private networks can be built. In a Virtual Private Network (VPN), the connection between the computers is encrypted so that no unauthorized person can eavesdrop on or modify the data sent. This is why VPN is used to securely access the home LAN or company network while on the move.
➤ Instructions: Networking computers with Hamachi via VPN
Hamachi supports different network typologies. For example, a Hamachi VPN can be used to connect several computers to each other as in a peer-to-peer network. Alternatively, you can put some computers into the role of hub or gateway, which the other computers in the Hamachi VPN can access encrypted.
Hamachi for games and data
Through the encrypted connection, Hamachi can also play LAN games over the Internet. However, you have to use the IPs assigned by the freeware. These IPs start with a 25 and are displayed via the client software. Alternatively it can be displayed with ifconfig under Linux and Mac and ipconfig under Windows.
Via the Hamachi-IPs, an encrypted connection via Internet to servers in the LAN is also possible. If such a connection is established, you can, for example, securely connect to the Hamachi-IP of a Samba server and access the data of its network drive.
System requirements and costs
Hamachi is free for a maximum of five computers in the Hamchi VPN. Only then do annual fees accrue.
The software is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS, with clients for Windows and Mac OS X offering a graphical user interface. Linux users must work on the command line in the terminal.
Remote desktop with Pro version only
Hamachi does not provide remote desktop control. For this purpose the
LogMeIn-Pro from the manufacturer, which makes it possible to use it with the
different licenses and costs. It not only supports
the remote desktop, but also provides access to files of computers. There are also LogMeIn Pro apps for Android, iPhone and iPad.
