CDex can copy and rip CDs free of charge under Microsoft Windows. The software can copy audio data from the audio CD to its own hard disk and convert the files ripped from the CD.
In the current CDex version, the setup program contains the OpenCandy-Installer, which sometimes installs additional software on the computer without being asked.
If you do not want this on your PC, you should call the installation program with the parameter “/NOCANDY”. Alternatively, it is recommended to deactivate the Internet connection before starting the installation program – this may prevent the OpenCandy-Installer from working. Further information can be found at the end of this article!
Rip CDs and convert files
CDex reads audio CDs and copies the contained tracks in WAV format to the hard disk. Since the software comes with many encoders, you can convert the ripped audio files directly into other file formats and save them. This goes through the batch processing with several files in parallel. The list of supported file formats is long. These include MP3, FLAC, OGG, OGA, APE, WMA, MP2, VQF, AAC, FAAC and FAAD2. If files are already stored on the computer in WAV format or one of the other formats, the ripper can convert them “later”. The file names of the ripped and converted files can also be created using various settings and parameters and saved on the hard disk.
Playing music and tagging MP3s
In addition to the encoders and converter functions, CDex also has other functions. An integrated audio player plays MP3 files from ripped audio CDs and is supported by a jitter correction and an equalizer, which are advantageous for both listening pleasure and storage. In addition, CDex offers useful features such as support for M3U and PLS playlist files and audio tags such as ID3V1 and ID3V2, which can be inserted directly when ripping CDs. In addition, the tool can access databases such as the CD Database (CDDB) on the Internet and obtain background information such as albums, artists and titles from here. These can be automatically saved in the corresponding files.
CDex to go
The CD ripper is also available as a portable version, which can be started directly from the USB stick without installation. CDex Portable is also available from the manufacturer’s website, but it is not fully up to date with the installation version. However, the core functions such as ripping music CDs and creating tracks for MP3 files are available. CDex Portable also comes as freeware and free of advertising – the developer is happy about donations.

The additional software is downloaded over the Internet and can therefore not be checked by us for viruses, spyware, Trojans or other malware.
If your antivirus software sounds an alarm, please take this seriously and cancel the installation.
Unfortunately, some adware installs itself unsolicited. If there is unwanted or harmful software on the computer despite your caution, AdwCleaner or CCleaner may be able to help. You can find more recommendations in our Special Adware & Remove Spyware section.
